Does Pokémon Day Matter?
Does the annual Pokémon Day celebration impact the Pokémon card market?
Pokémon Day 2025 is almost here: February 27, 2025.
It’s a day that celebrates the original release of Pokémon Red and Green in Japan on February 27, 1996. With 29 years of history since the original release of the games: there’s tons to be excited about.
But, as collectors and investors, should we expect this day to have any impact on the market?
The main event of Pokémon Day is the Pokémon Presents livestream, scheduled for 9:00 am EST on The Official Pokémon YouTube channel. Although this is exciting, these Pokémon Presents tend to follow a predictable structure, and many fans are not expecting much to come from this year’s event.
For example, we know we’re going to hear about updates to the Pokémon mobile games, including Pokémon Unite and Pokémon TCG Pocket. The updates to these games are always appreciated, but they’re not the kind of news that has any real impact on the larger Pokémon market.
The big news will be (hopefully) a close look at the upcoming Pokémon Legends Z-A game. This new game is expected to mix up the Pokémon gameplay formula and creates the possibility for new regional and entirely new Pokémon, which we will definitely see make their way into the TCG.
This is exciting… but, it’s unlikely to be market moving.
The other big announcement Pokémon fans are expecting this year is the announcement of Pokémon Black and White remakes. With a confirmed special TCG set coming this July that features all 156 Unova Pokemon, many fans believe this is intended to line up with the release of Black and White remakes.
Also exciting… but also not market moving.
The truth is: Pokémon day is a wonderful time to celebrate our shared love of Pokémon…
But it rarely means much for the Pokémon market.
For all the new Pokémon fans who have entered the market in the past year, hopefully Pokémon Day gives them enough news to keep them excited about the future of Pokémon.
But, unless there’s a bombshell unexpected announcement (in my opinion: unlikely), it’s simply not going to have any kind of short-term effect on the market.
And, that’s totally ok.
Besides: NEXT year’s Pokémon Day will be celebrating Pokémon’s 30th anniversary… Until then, let’s just enjoy the ride.
As usual…
