Welcome to the TCG Buyers Club Newsletter
I never wanted to write a newsletter.
When I started TCG Buyers Club back in May 2021, I just wanted to make short Instagram videos to share my love of Pokémon.
Because, prior to that, I had been streaming video games on Twitch for more than 5 years.
5 years of yelling into a mic to an audience… of zero.
Sure, sometimes a friend might tune in to support me for a couple minutes, but they have busy lives and would rarely stick around for long.
Instead, I would spend long hours every week, playing games on the internet, and pretending that maybe someone would tune in to enjoy it with me. (Even though they rarely did.)
But everything changed the first time I opened a Pokémon booster box on stream.
The set was XY Evolutions. The infamous reprint of Base Set released in 2016.
I needed that box.
I didn’t care that the market price had risen from $150 to more than $500 in only a couple months.
I just knew I wanted Pokémon in my life again. And to justify the cost: I was going to open it on stream.
And it was the single best stream I’d had in years!
It seemed like everyone, from old friends to brand new connections, were excited to revisit the joy of ripping Pokémon packs.
And, from that moment onward, I was absolutely hooked on Pokémon.
But: I was a streamer! If I was going to make Pokémon content I really only had a couple options… And, to me, the best way forward was to leverage the video equipment I’d bought over the years to create short Pokémon videos.
The last thing I’d ever do was write about Pokémon… right?
But, here we are.
See: it turns out, the first step to creating any video is to write the script. Even if I don’t record the script word-for-word, it became an essential step to figuring out what I really think about the Pokémon market.
Writing scripts was my way of wrestling with my ideas until I discovered insights worth sharing.
So, no: I never wanted to write a newsletter.
But, in trying to avoid it I’ve realized that a newsletter is the best tool I have for helping other Pokémon collectors and investors: because it forces me to think.
So, that’s how we get here: the TCG Buyers Club newsletter. Subscribers can expect my most up-to-date analysis and perspectives on the Pokémon market, so collecting and investing in Pokémon can be simple.
Cheers 🍻
